Synopsis
Recently, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) has been having a harder time due to the impact of COVID-19 along with the damage caused by climate change. Accordingly, North Korea's damage and difficulties are evident not only in the UN reports submitted by North Korea but also in related international reports. North Korea has made various efforts to respond to climate change and SDGs in collaboration with the UN organization located in Pyongyang. The government has created the so-called "North Korean SDG" and linked it to the science and technology sectors. As a result of this contradiction, as can be seen from the recent UN Security Council resolution, the international community has banned science and technology cooperation with North Korea. However, in terms of human life and human rights, it is necessary to prepare for cooperation with them. Under the assumption that UN sanctions will be resolved for cooperation with North Korea, the session aims to discuss the prospects for cooperation with North Korea based on science and technology related to the UN SDGs. To this end, In the session, South Korea and Europe experts on science and technology of North Korea will gather to discuss pending agendas on science and technology of North Korea and visible cooperation plans for achieving the SDGs. - Hosted by Unification Korea Association of Science and Technology (UKAST), National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST), and Hanns Seidel Stiftung (HSS) - Sponsored by Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) ---- Program - 15:20 - 15:30 [Opening Session] Dr. Park, Ho-Yong (President, UKAST) Dr. Kim, Joosun (Director-General, NST) - 15:30 - 16:40 [Session: S&T in North Korea and Prospect of SDGs Cooperation] Dr. Yang, Hong-Jin (Director, KASI) Dr. Lee, Hyung-Kew (Principal Researcher, KRISS) Dr. Koh, Kyung-Taek (Principal Researcher, KICT) Prof. James HAMMOND (University of London) Dr. Kang, Hojye (Prof, Freie Universität Berlin) Mr. Song, Jaeryoung (Senior Researcher, Green Technology Center) Mr. Chua, Calvin (Associate Head of Programs, Choson Exchange) - 16:40 - 16:50 [Open Discussion & Closing]
