Synopsis | A global goal of holding warming well below 2℃ on pre-industrial averages and to pursue efforts to limit temperature increase to 1.5℃ were agreed from the Paris Climate Agreement, COP21. South Korea’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 37%. In order to achieve the goal renewable energy sources have focused a special attention in worldwide.
Recently, there are huge public’s growing concerns about air pollution and nuclear safety in Korea. The government of South Korea released the energy blueprint where the share of renewable will increase from 7% in 2017 to 20% in 2030 by providing 48.7GW. To achieve the goal, it plans to add 30.8GW of solar power and 16.5GW of wind power. Especially, 13GW among the 16.5GW of wind power will be supplied by offshore wind power. However, there are still many technical challenges, which should be overcame to make the wind energy cost effective and efficient energy source competing with conventional energy sources.
This session focuses on sharing knowledge and experiences on current technologies related to offshore wind energy in both Europe and Korea. This session is a joint session organised by K4EF and KIER where in total six presentations will be presented. The more detailed programme will be found below. All presentations will be presented in Korean.

Synopsis | Hydrogen is considered as one of the most promising energy types in future for energy storage as well as energy supply. But its commercialization is not a straightforward process and many challenges have to be overcome. It is so timely to discuss what collaborations would be conceivable among various research institutes, companies and governments to find the bespoke hydrogen production and distribution system that would be best suited for each country and region.
KOSEN(Korean Scientists and Engineers Network, www.kosen21.org), a subsidiary of KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology), is supporting Korean researchers and communities residing in Korea and overseas to communicate and collaborate with each other on various global issues. In February, 2022, KOSEN held the online symposium titled ‘Hydrogen economy for net zero emission’ in which the Korean hydrogen researchers working in Korea and Europe were invited to present. In this complementary session, it is aimed to share the hydrogen business strategies/plans of governments and industries, introduce the latest hydrogen technology development and ultimately establish new research networks for global H2 R&D collaboration.
Please note that this session will be delivered in Korean.

Synopsis | The world is currently facing numerous major challenges ranging from poverty, diseases, and aging populations to the global environment and socio-economic issues such as climate change, housing, and transportation. The joint response at the regional and local levels has never been more imperative and essential to respond to these challenges.
Furthermore, the rapid changes and complexity of these challenges make it difficult to tackle them without integrating an approach that includes science, technology, and related fields and studies.
As such, DISTEP offers a specific space to see and share Daejeon and other global cities' perspectives on the regional policies for sustainable development and innovation harnessing science and technology. This session will encourage the participation of all stakeholders to identify common problems, explore solutions and ultimately see them reflected in viable policies.
This open forum invites all kinds of stakeholders needed for our city problems and discuss issues together. Therefore, this session will be a cornerstone to provide and utilize the participants for the upcoming World Organization of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) that will be held in Daejeon this October 10 to 14. A round-type open forum session based on some invitations will demonstrate their city's experiences briefly using pictures and explanations about, but not limited to, the S&T and Regional Policies topics .
Based on the EKC special session, Daejeon will accommodate and have a progressive relationship with cities towards the UCLG event. It is highly recommended to join and share all other experiences attended in the EKC conference. |

Synopsis | Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) are no longer just recommendations for businesses. For greater creativity and innovation, market competitiveness, hiring the best talent, and improving employee retention, DE&I become a "must-implement".
While European countries have been advocating for gender equity, diversity, and inclusion over the last few decades, which resulted in DE&I being well established in their business culture as well as in the society, DE&I are still in their initial stages and poorly understood in Korea.
Despite all the efforts for pursuing DE&I, women in STEM continue to be outnumbered by men in both Europe and Korea, and male-dominant culture and gender bias persist in workplaces. We will discuss the status quo and challenges of DE&I in Europe and Korea, as well as how DE&I policies and practices are improving chilly workplaces.
Two sessions will cover
1. Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Korea and Europe: Status and challenges
2. Group discussion of real-life examples of inclusive workplace cultures: best practices and areas for improvement
